Winter break activities offered in Cedar Rapids

Events take place at Ushers Ferry, NW rec center

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is offering several programs for children at Ushers Ferry Historic Village and the Northwest Recreation Center during winter break.

Ushers Ferry is located at 5925 Seminole Valley Trail NE and the rec center is located at 1340 11th St. NW.

Here is a look at the offerings:

American Girl Holiday Party

Takes place Wednesday, Dec. 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for girls ages 6-8 and 1 to 4 p.m. for girls ages 9-12 at Ushers Ferry. Participants will learn about the different holiday traditions of the American Girls by playing games, baking holiday foods and engaging in historic pastimes. The fee for ages 6-8 is $13 for Cedar Rapids residents and $14 for others. The fees for ages 9-12 are $23 and $27.

Winter Pioneer Day Camp

Takes place Thursday, Dec. 28 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for ages 6-8 and 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 9-12 at Ushers Ferry. Participants will learn how to cook on a wood stove, make their own toys and perform old-fashioned chores. This workshop will challenge them to make their own fun using their imaginations. The fee for ages 6-8 is $13 for Cedar Rapids residents and $14 for others. The fees for ages 9-12 are $23 and $27.

Food, Fire and Fun

Is offered Friday, Dec. 29 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for ages 6-8 and 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 9-12 at Ushers Ferry. Participants will learn about the importance of fire to the pioneers when they use it for heating, cooking and light. They will build a fire in a wood-burning stove to cook a special treat and make their own candles. The fee for ages 6-8 is $13 for Cedar Rapids residents and $14 for others. The fees for ages 9-12 are $23 and $27.

Winter Break Sports & More Camp

This new offering mixes it up by incorporating related art, crafts and science activities while learning sports. The camp for ages 6-10 meets from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 27-29 at the Northwest Recreation Center. Cost is $30 per person for Cedar Rapids residents and $37 for others. Registration deadline is Dec. 18.

Winter Break City Hoopers Camp

Basketball lovers, ages 7-10, can work on fundamentals and expand their skills in this new camp that takes place from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 27-29 at the Northwest Recreation Center. Cost is $32 per person for Cedar Rapids residents and $39 for others. Registration deadline is Dec. 18.
