Salvation Army once again offering programs

CEDAR RAPIDS — Registration is underway for holiday assistance offered to Linn County residents through The Salvation Army.

Applications for the Toys for Tots and Holiday Food Assistance programs are being accepted today through Friday and again from Nov. 13-17. Staff and volunteers will be accepting applications from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. daily on those dates. Evening hours from 4:30 to 7 p.m. also are available on Wednesday and Nov. 15.

No appointment is necessary.

All households that meet the income guidelines of 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible to apply for food assistance. Those households with legal custody of children age 14 and younger qualify for the toy distribution.

Applicants must bring the following to apply: Linn County picture identification card, proof of children and proof of income. Acceptable documents to verify proof of children living in the household include child’s school ID, child’s social security card, child’s birth certificate, child’s medical card and Department of Human Services Notice of Decision letter.

Acceptable documents to verify income include pay stubs from the last 30 days, a bank statement indicating social security payments or employers direct deposit, Social Security statement or letter from the Social Security Administration stating income, DHS Notice of Decision letter, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program approval letter and WIC packet.

Toys For Tots is a national program directed by the United States Marine Corps through the Marine Toys For Tots Foundation. The project has been active in the Cedar Rapids community since 1949 and has grown in size each year. Locally, The Salvation Army, Toys For Tots and other community partners collaborate to provide the program.

Last year, The Salvation Army distributed gifts to 2,473 children in Linn County through the program.

This year’s toy drive runs Monday, Oct. 30 through Friday, Dec. 8.
