Annual Hawkeyes celebration returns to Coralville Friday

CORALVILLE — FRYfest, the annual “celebration of all that is Hawkeye,” takes over Coralville’s Iowa River Landing Friday, with a concert, pep rally, live music, fireworks, Hawkeye trade show and panel discussions on Iowa sports. It’s all leading up to Saturday’s Hawkeyes football opener vs. Miami (Ohio). Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. at Kinnick Stadium. If you’re planning to attend FRYfest, here’s everything you need to know to help you on your way:

 

What: Eighth annual FRYfest

When: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday

Where: Coralville Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, 300 E. Ninth St., at Iowa River Landing in Coralville

Cost: Most events are free; wristbands for High Porch Block Party are $5 for adults and free for children age 12 and younger.

Parking: $5, all day at the Iowa River Landing north parking ramp and south parking lot adjacent to the Coralville Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the west parking ramp adjacent to the University of Iowa Health Care building at Iowa River Landing and at the Coralville Transit Intermodal Facility adjacent to the north ramp.

 

Schedule of Events:

FRYfest blood drive — 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hawkeye collectors showcase — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

World’s largest Hawkeye trade show — 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. More than 50 vendors are to be on hand.

Hayden Fry statue unveiling — 10:30 a.m. - Read more about the sculptors who created the bronze likeness

2016 Hall of Fame inductee panel discussion, followed by autograph session — 10:45 a.m. Hall of Fame inductees are Tyler Cleveland, men’s tennis; Toni Foster, women’s basketball; Dave Haight, football; Sean McCarty, men’s golf; Kimberly Stevens, women’s swimming; T.J. Williams, wrestling; and Gayle Blevins, softball head coach.

Hawkeye fashion show/product showcase — 1 p.m.

Hawkeye rivalries panel discussion, followed by autograph session — 2:30 p.m. Panelists include Bernie Wyatt, Dan McCarney, Ed Podolak, Don Patterson and Aaron Kampman. The panel moderator is retired UI sports information director Phil Haddy.

Ultimate Hawkeye trivia challenge and Iowa Olympians autograph session — 4:30 p.m.

Robert D. Ray Exemplar Award presentation — 5 p.m.

Iowa Olympians panel discussion — 5:15 p.m.

 

High Porch Block Party details: Doors open at 4 p.m.; opening band GI Jam takes the stage at 6 p.m.; pep rally at 6:30 p.m.; performance by Hairball at 8 p.m.; fireworks show at 10 p.m. You can bring lawn chairs, but you are not allowed to smoke or bring in coolers or outside beverages.
