Virginia (Reed) Hart
Virginia (Reed) Hart, 89, died Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton of pancreatic cancer.
Virginia was born on July 23, 1928, the daughter of Halla "Frank" and Edna (Holtorf) Reed. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton with the Class of 1946. Virginia was united in marriage to John Hart on June 7, 1947, in Vinton. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught eighth-grade physical science in Vinton for many years. She received her bachelor's degree from UNI in 1967. She enjoyed teaching very much and often stated how much she loved her students. In the early 1980s, Virginia became the owner/manager of the Red Lantern Lounge in downtown Vinton. After retiring, she worked part-time as a substitute teacher at the high school for many years.
Virginia enjoyed golfing, league bowling, playing cards, baking, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a well-known advocate for animal welfare, taking in many stray cats and dogs over the years.
Virginia is survived by her daughters, Crystal Hart of Vinton, Tracy (Mark) Sorensen of Des Moines and Kim (Craig Downing) Hart of Des Moines; granddaughters, Beth (Paul) Sorensen Guernsey of Seattle, Wash., and Emily Sorensen and boyfriend Sandy Diehl of Cambridge, Mass.; and her grandsons, William Hart and girlfriend, Lorena Acosta Parra, of Vinton and Matthew Hart of Vinton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, Brian; and two brothers, Glenn and Nolan Reed.
A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.
