Hiawatha

Violet Needham, 93, of Hiawatha, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, at West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m., at the chapel. Burial will follow in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Violet Needham was born in Boxholm, Iowa, on Feb. 29, 1924, the daughter of Carl and Anna (Carlson) Widen. She graduated from Boxholm High School. Violet married Donald Leroy Needham on Nov. 13, 1954, in Boone, Iowa. She and Donald moved from Boone to Cedar Rapids in the early 1950s, where she worked for Terry Duran and Rockwell Collins as a secretary.
Violet and Donald enjoyed traveling around in the early 1980s and were snowbirds with a home in Cedar Rapids and trailer in Vero Beach, Fla. Violet continued to be a snowbird until 2011. She loved the beach and sewing, liked to paint and read, and loved her HGTV home shows. Violet also loved to shop and spend time with her cat, Lola. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Violet is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Vern) Zakostelecky of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two grandchildren, Amanda Legate and Travis Legate; a great-granddaughter, Aluna Spalding; and two nephews, Carroll (Twila) Widen and Kenneth Widen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Needham; and siblings, Harry Widen and Martha Will.
