Born Rodney William Speicher on July 1, 1924, in Liscomb, Iowa, he was the son of William and Lillian (Hurdle) Speicher. He graduated from Liscomb High School. Rod was a part of the "Greatest Generation," serving our country honorably in World War II. After the end of the war, he married Pearl Gunderson, on Nov. 10, 1946, at Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. The couple farmed and made their home in Grundy, Marshall and Tama counties for 71 years. Rodney also was employed at Fisher Controls for 19 years.
He was a hardworking man who was a born farmer. Son Gary experienced many fall hunting trips for pheasant and deer with Chris, Matt and Rod on the farm's "back 40." It was a good day if he could fish and then go to an auction or work up scrap metal with Duane. Rod loved the special time he got to spend with daughter, Marcella on all of the different trips they had together. Dad and Tim enjoyed all seasons of farming and nature. Rodney W. enjoyed spending time at Rodney Edward's acreage relaxing and working on projects. Most of all, he treasured the time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all of their families.
Left to cherish his memory are four children, Gary (Susan) Speicher of Cedar Rapids, Marcella Small of Ames and her former husband, Larry Small, Duane (Karen) Speicher of Cedar Rapids and Tim Speicher of Tama; grandchildren, Christopher (Kara), Amy, Matthew, Sarah, David, Robert, Valesta, Elissia (Jon), Derek, Dylon, Kendra (Daric), Brandi (Brian), Samantha, Melissa, Tyler and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Sennah, Tayler, Kembry, Landry, Bryton, Brianna, Harper and Hadley; and his only surviving sibling, Shirley Gould of Marshalltown. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and friends.
In death, Rod rejoined his beloved wife, Pearl; son, Rodney E. Speicher; parents, William and Lillian; brothers, James and Merle; sisters, Doris and Donna; and grandsons, James and Jeremy.
