Robert E. Melchert, 62, of Marion, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospice Center. He had been under the care of Family and Essence of Life Hospice. The family will greet friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Faith Lutheran Church, 155 Boyson Rd., Marion, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be held and the family encourages visitors to come as you are and share in the fond memories you may have. Interment will take place at a later date. Following the church, friends may gather at the Starlite Room Restaurant, 3300 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
Bob was born Sept. 4, 1955, the son of Oscar and Margaret (Bryson) Melchert. He graduated from Linn-Mar High School (Marion) in 1974 and then attended the University of Northern Iowa. He married Deborah Salat. They later divorced, yet remained close friends. Bob worked most of his adult life in the life and disability insurance industry which included financial planning services. His fashion sense was developed at a young age while working at Armstrong's Department Store in the men's department and later working at Holly's Shop for Men. Having many interests, he was a Shriner, friend of Bill W, loved cars, sports, community causes (he was very generous) and time with family and friends. He also was a lifelong San Francisco 49ers and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Later in life, he took up interest in painting and photography. Bob loved his Lord, friends, family and a good laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his brothers, Ronald Melchert of Cedar Rapids and Mark Melchert (Sindi) of St. Louis; along with sister, Elaine Michaels of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family who will send all donations to the Shriners Hospital for Children. Direct donations in his memory also are encouraged.
