Robert LeRoy Blackwell, 87, died peacefully Oct. 26, 2017, at Winslow House Care Center in Marion. Services:
11 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Entombment with military rites: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Bob was born to Rollie and Edna Blackwell on July 2, 1930. He married Marlene (Mollie) Hodges on Nov. 11, 1953.
He is survived by four sons, Rick (Michael Ann), Mick, Robby (Patty) and Rod (Tracy); 12 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; his sister, Lurel Jean; sister-in-law, Claudia Van Dyke; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; seven siblings, Rae, Dick, Scott, Lepha, Alice, Otto and Mary Ann; a granddaughter; and three brothers-in-law.
Bob served in the Army. He was based in Japan for 32 months during the Korean War. He had the honor of attending the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight in 2016.
Over the years he worked at many places: Penick & Ford, Otis Footware, Bishop's Cafeteria, Kmart Automotive, Dur-o-Wall and Don's Skelly Station, and was a security guard at Midland Security. He graduated from Kirkwood's automotive program. Mollie and Bob were longtime deliverers of The Gazette.
His most prized possession were his sons, who are all hard-working and caring people. He was elated when the Cubs won the World Series! Bob and Mollie enjoyed bowling in various leagues over the years with their friends, sons and other relatives.
The family requests memorials be directed in his name to the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, PO Box 10704, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401.
