A resident of Lansing, Mich., for the past six years, Mercedes passed away Monday, April 10, 2017, following a lengthy treatment for endometrial cancer at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. During her stay at the hospice home, she noted receiving exceptional loving care from Dr. Kristen Bredin, medical director, Dr. Todd Wisser, and the wonderful hospice staff.
Both Mercy and her husband Jim had God's peace in their life, and she looked forward to meeting the Lord.
Mercy was born April 30, 1938, in Mitchell, S.D., where she attended local schools and subsequently graduated in 1959 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines. In 1980, she received a B.S.N. from Michigan State University in Lansing. She continued nursing in various positions throughout her life, retiring in 2002 from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after 15 years of service.
Mercy entered formation religious classes of the Order of Discalced Carmelites of the Central Province of the United States in 1950. She was a committed member of OCDS Community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Swartz Creek, Mich. She married Eugene Reyhons in 1965. They raised two sons, Matthew Reyhons and Kenneth McCurdy. In 2011, Mercy married James Shaver, a widower and longtime friend of the Reyhons family. Mercy and Jim made their home in Lansing, where they were members of St. Gerard Catholic parish.
Mercy is survived by her husband, James; her two sons, Matthew of Houston, Texas, and Kenneth of Waunakee, Wis.; five grandchildren, Zebella Light, Bailey and Mikayla Reyhons and Blake and Caden McCurdy; and nine siblings, Rose Edwards and Kathleen Zimmerman of South Dakota, Pauline Lee of Iowa, Winifred Hoots of Arizona, Richard Harris of Florida, Margaret Rye, Monica Toman and Michael Toman of California, and Karel Toman of Montana. She also is survived by 32 nieces and nephews; and numerous great- nieces and great-nephews. Additionally, she is survived by seven stepchildren, Father James Shaver of Leslie, Mich., Joseph Shaver of Ypsilanti, Mich., Michael Shaver of Maryland, Patrick Shaver of Columbus, Ohio, Timothy Shaver of Tawas City, Mich., Maureen Shaver of Frisco, Texas, and Margaret Weller of Bloomfield, Mich.
She was preceded in death by Eugene Reyhons; one brother, Robert Harris; one sister, Elizabeth Scherschel; and one stepson, Thomas Shaver.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at St. Gerard Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father James Shaver presiding. A luncheon will follow at Knights of Columbus-Richard Council, 5300 N. Grand River Ave., Lansing. Rite of Commital will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will be prayed Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw Hwy. in Lansing. Visitation will continue from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
