Mary Jane Juba
Mary Jane (Ritter) Juba, 92, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Watertown, S.D., passed away Jan. 5, 2018 surrounded by family at Mercy Hallmar care facility in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held in Watertown under the direction of the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel.
Mary Jane was born June 19, 1925, in St. Paul, Minn., to Walter and Elizabeth Ritter. She attended St. Bernards Catholic School in St. Paul and graduated from Washington High School, St. Paul, in 1943. Upon graduation, she worked for the Great Northern Railroad in its main office until her marriage to Jerome (Jerry) Juba on May 20, 1950, at St. Bernards Church, St. Paul. Following their wedding, they lived in Billings, Mont., and Fort Peck, Mont., before settling in Watertown in 1956. Together they raised seven children. Jerry and Mary Jane were married for 54 years before his passing in December 2004. In October 2015, she moved to Cedar Rapids, where she lived until she died peacefully last Friday.
Mary Jane was a devoted Catholic who deeply loved her family. She was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church for over 50 years. She spent her time caring for the family and managing the household. She treasured times spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary Jane loved music, especially Tennessee Ernie Ford and Lawrence Welk, growing up in St. Paul, eating Schwann's ice cream, listening to the Minnesota Twins, and in the early years in Watertown, square dancing.
She is survived by sons, John (Linda) Juba of Bismarck, N.D., and Pete (Peg) Juba of Watertown; daughters, Kathy (Bob Butikofer) Juba of Cedar Rapids, Ann (Mike) Laurier of Watertown, Mary (Gary) Swanson of Jordan, Minn., and Jennifer (fiance Bruce Timmerman) Juba of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Alyson (Brad) Chamberlain, Jolynn (Jacob) Bachman, Melanie Laurier, Tom (fiancee MaKaya Berg) Laurier, Kevin Laurier, Scott Laurier, Erin Wilson, Andrew Juba, Adam (Cassie) Juba, Alex Juba and Sarah Poyer; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Amelia Chamberlain, Quinn Trumm, Zeus Laurier and Ford Bachman; one brother, Walter Ritter Jr. of Arden Hills, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Therese Juba of Crystal, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Elizabeth; her husband, Jerry; son, Paul; brothers-in-law, Robert, Lambert, Bernard and Richard Juba;
sisters-in-law, Eunice Dale, Veronica Van Hee, Gertrude Juba, Gen Juba and Carol Ritter; and dear friend, Betty Lou Chase.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Holy Name of Jesus Church (Watertown), Alzheimer's Association or the Hospice of Mercy (Cedar Rapids).
