Marietta "Mary" Bennett, 94, of Pleasant Hill, formerly of Marion, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at Parkridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with visitation two hours before the service. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mary was born May 4, 1923, the daughter of Ralph and Emma (Lukemaier) Robinson, in Clarence, Iowa. The eighth of 12 children, Mary graduated from Tipton High School in 1941. She attended Northwestern Bible College in St. Paul, Minn., and then worked in Akron, Ohio, before moving Cedar Rapids. Mary was married to Ray Bennett on Sept. 30, 1941, at the Presbyterian Church in Marion. She was a member of Maranatha Bible Church and an employee of Sears for 26 years. Mary and Ray loved to travel, camp and cheer for the Chicago Cubs. She will be remembered for her love of God, her strong faith, her cheerful spirit and radiant smile, and her signature cinnamon rolls and homemade ice cream. Mary's favorite Bible passage was Psalm 121.
Survivors include son, David (Christine) Bennett of Itasca, Ill.; two daughters, Joan (Rick) Shultz of Des Moines and Sarah (James) Hedrick of Wilmington, Del.; four grandchildren, Michael and Jenna Shultz of Ames, Jamie Hedrick of Wilmington and Marisa Hedrick of Newark, Del.; and sisters, Helen Fankhauser of Iowa City and Virginia Bena of Strawberry Point.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; son, Mark Bennett; granddaughter, Rebecca Jane Shultz; parents; four brothers; and five sisters.
The family expressed their deep appreciation for the kind and loving care Mary received from the staff of Parkridge Specialty Care and Care Initiatives Hospice.
It was Mary's wish that memorial contributions be made to Maranatha Bible Church or a faith-based charity.
