Joseph W. "Joe" Wood Jr.
Joseph W. "Joe" Wood Jr., 76, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, surrounded by his family at the Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha because of lymphoma.
Private family interment was held in St. Mary Cemetery, Vinton. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
Joe was born Feb. 22, 1942, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Joseph William and Myrna Joyce Wood Sr. He graduated from Washington High School in Vinton in 1960.
On July 27, 1963, Joe was united in marriage with Judith Annette Mitrisin in Eddyville, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 2012.
Joe worked for D.C. Taylor and McDowell's. He also was self-employed and was a well-known contractor/carpenter in the Vinton area, leaving his signature on every project he completed.
Joe was a member and eucharistic minister at St. Mary Catholic Church in Vinton and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He'd been a member of the Vinton Jaycees and the Bee Club. He enjoyed nature and outdoor activities, such as tending his honeybees, hunting and mushrooming. He loved attending his grandchildren's activities and taking them on adventures. His own adventures included skydiving and rescuing orphaned animals. Joe was a mentor to many and a good man.
Joe is survived by his children, Jody (Neil Hetherington) Nelson of Eagan, Minn., and Julie (Doug) Schmidt and Jason (Sara) Wood, both of Cedar Rapids; his fiancee, Judy Burkey of Vinton; three brothers, Ed (Roxie) and Loren (Laura) Wood, both of Vinton, and Jay (Angie) Wood of Hinckley, Ohio; stepbrother, Dennis (Pat) Powers of Vinton; three sisters, LaVonne Paulson and Wanita Karnopp, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Sharon (Jim Coontz) Allsup of La Porte City; seven grandchildren, Bradley (Michelle) Kelley, Jennifer and Isaac Schmidt, and Troy, Jaden, Kaylee and Mark Wood; and one great-granddaughter, Carlee Kelley, plus another one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Camillo Wood; his wife, Judy; a brother, Mickial Wood; and his faithful sidekick, Woobie.
A memorial fund has been established.
