Dale Bappe, of Marion, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016. His family was at his side at the Ed and Joan Hemphill Hospice Care Center in Cedar Rapids.
Dale was born in Mallard, Iowa, on Sept. 6, 1931, to Charles and Mildred Peterson Bappe. He grew up in Ames and attended Ames High School. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict in the Signal Corps.
Dale was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to school at the University of Iowa, where he met the love of his life, Nina. The couple was united in marriage on July 10, 1960. They built a house in Marion and started a family.
Dale worked his entire career as a mechanical engineer at Penford Products in Cedar Rapids.
Dale was a wonderful father. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and traveling during retirement. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a devoted husband; he and Nina had just celebrated their 56th anniversary.
Dale's philosophy in life was: We will never be able to understand what ultimate reality is. It is best to be non-judgmental and kind to people.
Those left to cherish Dale's memory are his wife, Nina; daughter, Sue (Jake) Adcock of Cary, N.C.; son, Mark (Jennifer) Bappe of Essex, Mass.; brother, Don Bappe; and grandchildren, Jenni, Josh, Owen and Kate.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Bappe; and sister, Joan Danielson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Marion Christian Church, 1050 McGowan Blvd., Marion, with the Rev. Peter Mitchell presiding.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
