Barbara Montag, 77, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, at her home following an extended illness.
A gathering and prayer service will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. A time of food and fellowship will follow at the Center Junction Community Building.
A memorial fund has been established.
Surviving are seven children, Leroy "Butch" Hartwig, Harold Hartwig, Beatrice Hochhalter, Karl Hartwig, Judi Bechthold, Joe Hartwig and Leon Hartwig; five stepchildren, Dottie Morales, Les Montag, Larry Montag, John Montag and Bev Johnson; 16 grandchildren; 16 stepgrandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 26 stepgreat-grandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Montag; a son, Larry, in 2010; and her brother, Edwin, in 1964.
Barbara Virginia Eilers was born Nov. 18, 1939, in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Beatrice Smith Eilers. She graduated from Morley High School in 1959. Barbara married Kenneth Hartwig on June 21, 1959, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dubuque. They later divorced in 1976. Barbara had been employed at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Ennoble Manor in Dubuque, Operation New View in Dubuque and the Last Straw in Worthington. She married Joseph Montag on Aug. 21, 1976. He preceded her in death.
