Stephen Simmons sharpens his rootsy folk-rock with his 10th album, mixing the twang of country music with sharp observations and the stomp of rural, roadhouse rock ’n’ roll. Brian Johannesen, formerly of Iowa City, takes inspiration from the people and places he’s encountered along his journey to make records that portray gritty, hopeful Americana. His latest release, “Northern Town,” explores his favorite subjects — whiskey, women and wanderlust.
