The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio likes to stress his working-class upbringing in Las Vegas and Miami as the son of a bartender and a mother who was a maid and cashier.

Rubio graduated from the University of Florida in 1993 before attending law school at the University of Miami. He entered politics as a West Miami city commissioner in 1998. He became a Florida legislator, where Gov. Jeb Bush was a mentor. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010.

While Rubio has trumpeted his rise from the working class, his use of a personal finances have garnered headlines, including questions about his use of a Florida Republican Party credit card for personal expenses. Rubio has said repeatedly he repaid any personal expenses charged to the card.

Rubio and his wife, Jeanette, have four children, Amanda, Daniella, Anthony and Dominick.
