Sears closing Dubuque Kennedy Mall store in late April

50 employees of the store will be eligible to receive severance, opportunity to transfer within company

Sears Holdings on Tuesday notified employees of its location in Dubuque's Kennedy Mall that it will close the store in late April.

Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings, said the store at 555 John F. Kennedy Road will begin its liquidation sale on Feb. 7. The 50 employees of the store will be eligible to receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other area Sears and Kmart stores.

Riefs said most of the Dubuque Sears employees are part time, hourly associates.

"This store is being closed because the lease was not renewed," Riefs said in a statement. "Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model.

"These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home."

Chicago-based Sears Holdings closed its Kmart store on Collins Road NE in Cedar Rapids in mid-December. Riefs said the owner of the shopping center, RCG Ventures of Atlanta, Ga., declined to renew the store's lease.

Sears Holdings closed its anchor store in Coral Ridge Mall in late January 2013 after selling the building to mall owner General Growth Properties,

Sears will continue to operate mainline stores at Lindale Mall in northeast Cedar Rapids and Crossroads Mall in Waterloo. The retailer also has Sears Hometown Stores, which are locally owned and operated, in southwest Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and other Iowa communities.
