Tyler Wiegers first few moments as an Iowa Hawkeye began with a stumble.

Friday afternoon, the quarterback from Detroit Country Day (Detroit, Mich.) announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on Twitter, saying he "Committed to Iowa University." Whoops. After a few corrections from Hawkeye fans, Wiegers corrected himself. So, about an hour into being a Hawkeye, Wiegers showed some moxie.

"It happened last night, but I had to wait until after all my tests and quizzes today to break it," Wiegers told "I talked to Coach [Phil] Parker, Coach [Greg] Davis and Coach [Kirk] Ferentz and they were all really excited. They're excited to get me out there, get working and they think I can definitely become a great leader for the school."

Six weeks ago, Wiegers, ranked by Rivals as the No. 13 pro-style quarterback in the country, de-committed from Rutgers, where he had been committed since April. Wiegers told that bullying allegations at Rutgers shaped his decision to de-commit from the school.

"It's nothing against the coaches, I love all those guys and built great relationships with them," Wiegers told on Nov. 20. "But it was really a family decision, just where I want to be with a stable program and I'm not really sure about that with RU, right now. I hope that all clears up, but I guess right now I just want to take some other visits and see what else is out there. There is a lot going on right now, and the coaches say they'll clear it up soon."

Shortly after de-commiting in November, Wiegers visited Iowa. asked about Iowa.

Coach [Kirk] Ferentz is a great guy," Wiegers told "I really like all the coaches out there, actually. It's a really good Midwest feel out there. I like the campus a lot, the people there are really nice. It's a pretty good school. They have a good medical school and a lot of other good programs out there. Those are the things that attracted me and they are a school I grew up watching, too. So there is some familiarity there."

As a junior, Wiegers completed 173 of 285 for 2,465 yards, 22 TDs and four interceptions.

Rivals rates Wiegers as a four-star recruit. As the No. 13-ranked pro-style QB, heís in a neighborhood, for comparison, with No. 12 Morgan Mahalak, a California native who's committed to Oregon, and No. 14 J.J. Cosentino, a Pittsburgh, Pa., native and Florida State commitment.

Wiegers also had offers from Rutgers, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Toledo.

Wiegers is Iowa's 18th commitment for the 2014 class. On his radio show Tuesday night, Ferentz†said the class will land between 19 and 21. Iowa will be highly selective in recruits before the national signing period begins on Feb. 5. Some of the names still out there for Iowa include offensive linemen Brian Wallace and Chukwuma Okorafor, wide receiver Adonis Jennings and juco defensive end Torey Hendrick.
