Nine weeks, 50 hours each, $5,000 and a whole new education.
"It's sort of unusual that a town our size would be doing this," said Jennifer Ott, JPEC Training and Engagement Liaison. "We've just been listening to area employers say the pool is not very deep for this type of skill."
The course will be taught by people who are working in the industry; primarily Thomas Hansen, founder of Iowa City's Fresk Labs, who dropped out of a Ph.D. program at the UI to start his web development company.
While nine weeks won't turn amateur coders into experts, the course is designed to build a foundation that students can build on, Ott said.
Dev/Iowa begins on January 13th and runs through March 14th. Cost for the nine week course is $5000 and there is tuition assistance available. More information is available on the IowaJPEC website.
The Dev/Iowa Bootcamp isn't the only major program the UI is launching this year to support entrepreneurship. Venture School, which emphasizes market research and testing hypothesis rather than writing a traditional business plan, is well underway in Iowa City, and will expand to Des Moines in February.
