Trail route extension is safety concern

This letter is a plea to Hoover Trail bikers, walkers and runners.

The Ely City Council has voted to approve extension of the Hoover Trail through Ely along State Street. We own one of the homes along the proposed route. Other homes and families also are affected. Our main concern is safety as the route will cross our driveways and two busy side streets, which many of the residents of Ely use to gain access to the highway. This means that you will be crossing our driveways and busy intersections and risking a serious accident as we come and go daily.

This is a tragedy waiting to happen. The option that was chosen by the council was one of several. It was the least expensive and was chosen primarily for that reason. Obviously, the cheapest option is not the safest option. State Street is the part of the main highway that links Solon to Cedar Rapids. No traffic studies were done to see how many vehicles travel the highway daily. It is a challenge getting on and off the highway without the added worry of trail users in our path as we try to access our own driveways or use the side streets.

If you have concerns about this proposed route plan, contact the Ely City Council and the Linn County Conservation Board. We support a bike trail, but not going through our front yard. Your safety should be the most important consideration and your opinion should matter.
