California based software testing company expanding to Iowa City
Software-testing company is looking for office space close to UI
A Redding, Calif., software testing company is expanding to Iowa City.
Shasta QA provides software, website and smartphone testing for clients in education, medicine, finance, government and supply chain management. The company also helps clients with technical documentation, independent verification and validation.
Shasta QA is operating from the Iowa City CoLab. The company is looking for an office close to the University of Iowa, said Don O'Connell, owner and CFO of Shasta QA.
Shasta QA employs 60 people — 30 working in Redding and 30 in Chico, Calif. Three employees have been relocated to Iowa City, O'Connell said.
"We'll be immediately looking to hire three to five people," he said. "Then next year, through attrition in our Redding and Chico offices and expected new work, we'll be likely adding five or 10 more jobs."
By the end of 2014, he hopes to have 12 full-time software testers working in Iowa City.
While Chico and Redding are 70 miles apart, O'Connell said Shasta QA draws on the same population base, prompting the decision to expand elsewhere.
"We needed a bigger gene pool to recruit talent from and we like the university," he said. "We like the education backgrounds of the local population."
O'Connell said the company researched other areas in the Midwest and California before settling on Iowa City."We're looking for a place that's not too big and not too small," he said. "If you go to a major city, then large corporate America will be there and then I'll have problems competing for staff and talent and salaries."
