Student ticket demand down for Iowa football
Students lose section of seating to accommodate public ticket sales
IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa sent an e-mail to students Wednesday afternoon to inform them that the student section at Kinnick Stadium would be decreased by one for the remainder of the 2013 season.
A UI athletics official said the reason is student-ticket demand has reached the space available and that space is needed for ticket buyers from the general public.
"Our No. 1 preference, far and away, is to have that section filled with UI students," said Rick Klatt, UI associate athletics director for external relations. "They bring the energy that our team feeds off each Saturday and being in Kinnick on game day, I believe, is a big part of the college experience."
After Iowa's 30-27 loss to Northern Illinois last weekend, UI sports information sent a release saying 3,000 student season ticket packages remained available. The Kinnick student section holds about 10,400 and approximately 7,400 student tickets have been sold.
Prior to Northern Illinois, Iowa sold single-game tickets to the general public that were assigned seats in section 217, which is just under the south end zone scoreboard, because all other available seats were singles scattered throughout the stadium. Student tickets are general admission and, thus, general public buying tickets received a section, row and seat assignment, Klatt said.
Klatt said it's possible, if not likely, that another section of the space reserved at the start of each season for use by UI students will be designated for the general public to accommodate demand. He also said the UI expects to sell more student season tickets and single-game student tickets for guests.
"What we don’t sell to UI students and guests of UI students will be sold to general public when there is demand," Klatt said. "There will most certainly be demand for our four home Big Ten games."
Iowa (0-1) has six home games remaining, beginning with Saturday's game against Missouri State (0-1). Iowa's home games against Big Ten opponents are Michigan State (Oct. 5), Northwestern (Oct. 26), Wisconsin (Nov. 2) and Michigan (Nov. 23).
