Forever Health Cafe, new restaurant that touts healthy choices will open its doors, Saturday, June 29.

A grand opening is set for 1 to 4 p.m. for the 2,500-square-foot restaurant at 2811 Wiley Blvd. SW, Suite A. Its normal hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Owner and Cedar Rapids native Justin Dowie has owned several fitness centers in Iowa and earned several nutrition and fitness certifications.

Health and fitness "has always come easily to me," he said. "Now, ask me to fix something on a car, and I wouldn't be able to change the oil. I've just always felt that this was my gift, what I was good at."

The health-minded cafe will serve salads, soups, wraps and sandwiches as well as feature a children's menu.

People often have the misconception that healthful food doesn't taste good, Dowie said, so he worked with his head chef to design a menu with flavor and substance.

Dowie hopes to get Forever Health Cafe certified as a Blue Zones Restaurant. This certification means several menu requirements have been met, including low-sodium counts, portion sizes and the absence of certain ingredients.

The menu also must list all ingredients used in each item so consumers know what they are eating, he added.

In addition, fitness and wellness tips will be sprinkled throughout the restaurant and Dowie plans to hold wellness events and bring in speakers.

"With the obesity rate the way it is parents and teachers need to be better educated on how to eat so they can teach their kids," he said.
