School board approves sale of Educational Service Center
Space will be turned into apartments, town homes and accompanying parking areas
Members of the Cedar Rapids School Board have waved goodbye to the Educational Service Center.
During Monday's regular meeting, board members approved sale of the building to local real estate developer Steve Emerson. The $771,100 deal includes the structure, located at 346 Second Ave. SW and 353 Second Ave. SW, as well as vacant lots at 210 Fifth St. SW and the corner of Second Ave. and Fifth St. SW in Cedar Rapids.
According to Scott Olson, who is the Cedar Rapids Community School District's real estate representative in the transaction, this completes the district's disposition of its properties damaged in the 2008 flood.
No one spoke during the public hearing on the sale, which preceded board approval, during Monday's meeting.
Emerson is planning to turn the space into apartments, townhomes and accompanying parking areas. He had initially made an offer for a portion of the property in April 2012 and changed his offer once Maranatha Bible Church decided not to acquire the 210 Fifth St. SW lot, extending the process for Emerson and the district.Olson anticipated that the deal will close in mid-February, once additional paperwork is completed.
