Bone-chilling cold seizes NE Neb., northern Iowa
The weather service issued a wind chill warning on Monday
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The bone-chilling winds of winter have struck northern Iowa, northeast Nebraska and other parts of the upper Midwest and Plains.
The National Weather Service says a temperature reading of minus 9 in Mason City combined with gusty winds to make it feel like 34 below zero on Monday morning.
The cold extended south to Des Moines, as well, where it dropped to minus 2 with a wind chill of minus 17.
The weather service issued a wind chill warning for north-central Iowa, extending north and northwest into the Dakotas and Minnesota.
A wind chill advisory spread west from Wisconsin and northern Illinois to northeastern Nebraska and other parts of the Dakotas.
South Sioux City, Neb., shared a reading of minus 1 with Sioux City across the Missouri River in Iowa.
