MBB: Cyclones try to rebound after loss to Iowa

Iowa State was out-boarded by Hawkeyes on Saturday

AMES — When faced with the inevitable question, Iowa State point guard Korie Lucious chose his refuge as the site for answers. As always.

“Get back in the gym and practice, talk to each other, see what we need to do, see what we did wrong, watch film on what we did,” said Lucious, who in the aftermath of Friday’s 80-71 loss to Iowa tried to turn the page. “Just get better.”

Getting well begins tonight at 6 against Nebraska-Omaha in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones (6-3) are coming off the only game in which they’ve been out-rebounded this season — and searching for solutions to problems that cropped up in Iowa City.

One: Ragged play.

ISU saw its three-game win streak against the Hawkeyes snapped in large part because of turnovers. Nineteen of them against 14 assists.

“Everybody just (has) to come together,” said Will Clyburn, who was held scoreless while committing five turnovers against Iowa. “We’ve got to start playing for each other, become a family, become more of a family.”

Coach Fred Hoiberg said his team seemed out of sorts in Iowa City. His starters, in particular, struggled on the stat sheet, totaling just 32 of 71 points.

Forwards Melvin Ejim and Anthony Booker found foul trouble early. Ejim, the Big 12’s leading rebounder entering the game, was limited to 13 minutes. He fouled out with five points and four rebounds — his second-lowest scoring effort in the past 19 games.

“I’m surprised we only lost by nine,” Hoiberg said.

That’s partly because Clyburn endured his first scoreless effort as a Cyclone.

“Will will bounce back,” Hoiberg said.

Perhaps against the Mavericks (2-8), who are coming off an 86-40 loss at Wisconsin.

“Just hit the drawing board,” Clyburn said. “New day.”
