MBB: Mustangs beat Luther, Cornell & Kirkwood lose

Small college basketball roundup features the night's men's games


Alex Coleman had 13 points and 13 rebounds and led Mount Mercy to a 66-57 win against Luther last night at Hennessey Recreation Center.

It’s the eighth straight win for 9-1 Mount Mercy, which is ranked 15th in the NAIA Division II coaches’ poll.

Luther dropped to 4-3.

Lamar Wall led Mount Mercy with 14 points. Chad Underwood chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Michael Crocker and Zach Matos score 14 points apiece for Luther. Matos also pulled down nine rebounds.


Mitch Murphy scored a game-high 21 points, and went 15-for-15 from the free throw line in the second half, and led Knox to victory in Galesburg, Ill.

Joey Guth led Cornell with 16 points. Four other Cornell players scored in double figures, with Reggie Greenwood scoring 15, John Harth 14, Alex Miller 14 and Nick Bobb 10.

Cornell fell to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the MWC. Knox is 1-4, 1-2.


Indian Hills made 10 of 20 3-point shots at Johnson Hall in Cedar Rapids and held off Kirkwood for the ICCAC victory.

Indian Hills led 39-37 at the break, then both teams scored more than 50 points in the second half — Indian Hills shooting 53.6 percent and Kirkwood 51.7 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Kirkwood put five players in double-figure scoring: J.C. Fuller and Najeal Young 17 apiece, Devan Douglas 16, Kevin Hunter and Gage Heffernan 11 apiece. Heffernan added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Frank Williams led six Indian Hills scorers in double figures with 20 points.
