Boy shot after wandering onto Iowa shooting range

Boy taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; no condition report available

An 8-year-old boy was shot in the head after he wandered out into a shooting range Monday.

Emergency responders were called to a shooting range on the north side of Black Hawk Park in Cedar Falls around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival, they found the boy being attended to by his mother and other people at the range.

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said Monday night that the boy seemed to be in good condition. He was originally transported by ambulance to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, then airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. No update on his condition was available from UIHC.

A news release on the incident said the boy had a gunshot wound to the head and that he was accidentally shot by another family member, who was doing target practice at the range with a .22 caliber rifle.
