Several more cats removed from abandoned Sioux City home

Total of 66 cats removed; more likely in walls and vents; homeowner faces animal neglect charges

Authorities say several more cats have been trapped at a reeking Sioux City home.

Cindy Rarrat of Sioux City Animal Adoption & Rescue Center said Friday that a total of 66 cats have been taken away from the house. Rarrat says more cats are still in the walls and ventilation system of the three-level house, so more traps have been set.

She says between seven and 10 cat carcasses were found by officials who entered the home on Monday. Some of the rescued cats have since died.

Rarrat says conditions inside the home were unbearable.

The homeowner, 56-year-old Mark Lanning, of Sioux City, faces 14 counts of animal neglect. A phone listed for Lanning is no longer in service. Online court records don't include the name of his attorney.
