Mercy kicks off design contest for Donor Memorial Wall

CEDAR RAPIDS – Mercy Medical Center invites creative and passionate individuals and groups in the area to participate in raising awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation. This fall, beginning Sept. 1, Mercy is soliciting creative ideas from members of the community on designs for a new organ and tissue donation memorial wall to be permanently displayed in Mercy Medical Center’s Lundy Pavilion.

“We have a wealth of artistic expertise here in our community and we are excited about working with local artists on this important project,” said Vicki Cirkl, director of patient relations and chair of Mercy’s organ donation committee. “The design chosen for the memorial wall will live for years to come to remember and celebrate those who provide the greatest gift: the gift of life or sight to someone else.”

Hospitals across the country have chosen various ways to memorialize those who donate organs and tissues. As Mercy increases its efforts around ensuring more lives can be saved or aided through donations, the hospital will work closely with community members to determine how to best illustrate that commitment within the hospital.

Mercy will select the winning design for the memorial wall and unveil it at a ceremony in the spring of 2013. The individual or team that submits the winning design will receive a $500 cash prize. More importantly, they will be part of raising awareness and education around organ and tissue donation. The space created for the memorial will serve as a place where family and friends of those who donate may find comfort and a place for reflection.

Currently, there are approximately 600 individuals in Iowa on the waiting list for organ donations and more than 127,000 people registered as organ donors through the Iowa Donor Network. Together with the community, Mercy is hoping to increase the number of people registered in Linn County by three percent, and help more people.
