Galleria of Iowa's true freshmen
Here are a bunch of photos of the true freshmen from last week's scrimmage courtesy of Gazette photographer Jim Slosiarek.
This only will include the true freshmen from last Saturday, so no RBs.
Unless something I don't see happening happens, I think Sean Draper plays. He's running in nickel situations. Iowa could end up running a lot of that this season.
Ohio WR Cameron Wilson will have opportunity, especially with OC Greg Davis talking six to seven WRs in the mix. He also could play special teams, a la Don Shumpert his first two seasons.
CB Kevin Buford picked Iowa over the MAC. Illinois' new staff took a late run. Buford is in there with Draper in second-team reps and nickel opportunity.
QB C.J. Beathard will redshirt. In his time with the 3s last week, he looked like he belonged. He hit his marks and looked comfortable in the pocket. Might've held the ball too long, but it was a scrimmage.
Punter Connor Kornbrath might be Iowa's most important freshmen. He might touch the ball more than any of them, outside of the running backs. He has a shot at the job. Maybe we'll learn more tomorrow.
Remember when Adrian Clayborn used to tangle with Bryan Bulaga and, later, Riley Reiff every day in practice? That was steel sharpening offensive and defensive linemen. Maybe OL Reid Sealby and DT Jaleel Johnson turn into that kind of legacy? Oh yes, easier said than done.
Or DT Faith Ekakitie and . . .
. . . and OL Mitch Keppy.
Johnson and Ekakitie (kneeling left).
OT Ryan Ward ran with the No. 2s last weekend.
Will DE Drew Ott play this year? Probably not. Will he play next year? I think yes.
Another shot of WR Greg Mabin.
WR Tevaun Smith literally looking it in.Safety Ruben Lile suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season.
