Tom Brands, Ironside expected to race for charity next Friday at Hawkeye Downs
Van Meter Industrial Night event will benefit Aiming for a Cure
University of Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands and former Hawkeye four-time All-American and Cedar Rapids Jefferson two-time state champ Mark Ironside are expected to compete in a charity Legends car Race on Friday, June 15, at Hawkeye Downs Speedway for Van Meter Industrial Night.
The third annual celebrity race will be held during weekly points races at the track. Admission is a minimum of $1 donation, although spectators are encouraged to give as much as possible, to benefit Aiming For A Cure. Admission is normally $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for those 12 years and older.
The previous two races have including former Iowa and NFL star Tim Dwight and Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett. Brands and Ironside will race the Legends cars against a Van Meter executive on the quarter-mile track. Read about the 2011 Celebrity Charity race featuring Dwight: 2011 Preview/2011 Race Night
Ironside and Brands are both auto racing fans. Ironside was approached a couple of months ago and was persuaded by the cause.
"I was like, 'No problem. Where do I sign?' " Ironside said. "I'd be happy to do it, especially since it's a benefit and an opportunity to raise money for Aiming For A Cure which is a great foundation."
Ironside and Brands have not spoken about the race. Maybe because the last time the two were on a track together - racing go-karts - a third driver had to go get stitches after a wreck. The two will likely take practice laps in the upcoming week.
"He better get out there and practice," Ironside said. "It's going to be taken seriously."In the past, the event has also included a raffle and even a live auction. Van Meter has raised more than $12,000 for charity at this event the last two years.
