Iowa lineman Dan Heiar charged with drunken driving

Iowa offensive lineman Dan Heiar was charged with drunken driving after sustaining serious injuries in a one-car accident three months ago, according to online court documents.

Heiar, 20, was driving westbound on Interstate 80 around 2:45 a.m. on April 10 when his truck veered off the road and hit a guardrail at the 255 mile marker near West Branch. The truck then slid down a hill and settled on its top, pinning the Heiar inside. Heiar was hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for several weeks following the crash.

Law enforcement officials say alcohol was found in Heiar's vehicle at the scene.

A criminal complaint was filed June 27. Heiar has pleaded not guilty and his arraignment is scheduled for July 29.

Heiar, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighed 280 pounds before the crash, transferred to Iowa in the spring after two seasons at Iowa Western Community College. He went to high school at Northeast Goose Lake. He likely will red-shirt this season.
